The
FOSS
Innovation project
The typical offshore wind park is usually installed on the seabed.
But once the water depth is more than 60 meters, this method becomes challenging and expensive.
However, 80% of the world's offshore wind is located at depths greater than 60 meters.

Due to this challenge the FOSS project was launched to facilitate the development and production of a floating substation that can be used at locations where the water is more than 60 meters deep.

With over 20 years of experience with offshore structures, the partners in the project have designed a floating 3-column --- that provides a safe, secure and stable foundation, even in adverse weather conditions.
The unique design has many benefits, such as:
The 3-column design reduces warping of the topside and extends the life of the structure while reducing maintenance costs.
The structure requires less material, reducing fabrication time and easing topside mating operation
Provides beneficial mooring loads and lessened sea-bed impact
Floating structures can be deployed almost anywhere.

The FOSS innovation project began in January 2023 and ended in November 2024.
The project had a total budget of 9.7 million DKK and has received 6 million DKK from the Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Program (EUDP)

A 1:100 scale test was conducted at Aalborg University's research facilities in Esbjerg, Denmark.

It is this digital model that shows the concept can be built, installed and utilized by the offshore industry.
After finalizing a successful demonstration in Denmark, the product is now ready for full global commercialization.

The FOSS innovation project is a stepping stone towards a green future, where the partners have taken the concept of the floating offshore semi-submercible from the drawing board to a scaled test.

This has resulted in a verified product to the global green energy market.
