How artists like Edward W. Hardy are reshaping classical music

meet the artist

Edward W. Hardy is a professional African American classical musician and composer. He plays the viola, violin, and writes his own compositions.

The industry

According to the League of American Orchestras, black musicians make up less than 2% of orchestras.

EARLY BEGINNINGS

Hardy began playing violin at OPUS 118 Music School in Harlem. His teacher, an advocate for diversity in classical music, Roberta Gauspari, was played by Meryl Streep in the film, Music in the Heart.

The community

Thanks to music festivals and organizations, like Gateways, Color Music, and SPHINX, more Black and Latinx classical musicians have found a voice in the white-dominated field.

"Black composers have created classical music for centuries, yet they are underrepresented in concert programming and in classical music education."

Rachel Pine, Music by Black Composers Project

the goal

Hardy has made it his mission to become an example for other black classical musicians in the industry. His Instagram (@edwardwhardy) showcases his performance skills in way that is attractive to young audiences.
